Konus Digimax-90 go-to Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope uses a lens and two mirrors to fold a high power 49" long optical system into a very compact 9" tube. This easily transported 90mm aperture Konus telescope is designed to automatically find and follow nearly 43,000 solar system and deep space objects for you - all the while showing you sharp detail in small bright objects, such as the Moon, planets, star clusters, and binary stars.
If you want to see more detail in faint nebulas and galaxies, however, the greater light-gathering capacity of a larger aperture reflector might be a better choice than this 3.5" aperture Konus specialist scope. For the solar system enthusiast, however, it's hard to beat the sharply detailed and spurious color-free optics of a good Maksutov such as this Konus.
The Konus scope's go-to equatorial mount has an adjustable height tripod. A convenient battery-operated dual-axis motor drive keeps the Moon and planets in the field of view for extended no-hands viewing sessions.
The 90mm Konus Digimax-90 go-to computerized Maksutov is not a scope for everyone. However, if you want to view the solar system in detail for not a lot of money, this may be just the scope for you.

- Compound optical design: 1250mm focal length 90mm aperture f/13.9 all-glass Maksutov-Cassegrain lens/mirror optical design. The optical tube weighs only 3.2 pounds, making it easy to transport and set up.
- Multicoated optics: The Maksutov corrector lens at the front of the scope has antireflection multicoatings on both sides of the lens for high light transmission and good contrast.
- Focuser: A knob at the rear of the optical tube moves the primary mirror back and forth internally to focus the telescope. The focuser is very precise, requiring twenty turns to go from its closest terrestrial focus to infinity, but only a few turns are required to move from solar system objects (such as the Moon) to objects at infinity (such as a star cluster).
- Star diagonal: A 90 degree viewing angle image-erecting 1.25" star diagonal provides a comfortable viewing position. The erect/right-reading image in the star diagonal is oriented the way you see the sky with your unaided eye, through the red dot finder, and on your star charts, making it easy to orient yourself to the heavens. There is no annoying reversed image as you find in conventional 90 degree star diagonals. The erect/right-reading images and the scopeıs altazimuth mount also make the Digimax-90 a good choice for use as a terrestrial spotting scope.
- Two eyepieces: You get two good quality medium/medium high power 1.25" eyepieces - a 10mm (125x) and a 17mm (73.5x). Both eyepieces are a higher quality four-element Plıssl optical design than youıll find in most other telescopes in this price range. They have antireflection multicoatings on their lens surfaces for sharp images and very good contrast. Instead of providing low quality eyepieces that give unrealistically high (and often unusable) magnifications, Konus provides higher quality eyepieces with powers you can use and enjoy every night you take your Digimax-90 out to observe. Optional higher and lower power eyepieces are available to let you extend your magnification range significantly.
- Moon filter: You get a 1.25" green optical glass Moon filter that threads into the base of the eyepieces. It cuts the glare of the brightly lighted Moon and improves the contrast. This makes it is easier for you to see faint details that might otherwise be washed out by the brightness of the lunar surface.
- Red dot finder: An illuminated red dot finder attaches to the side of the optical tube. If properly collimated (aligned) with the view through the main telescope, the red dot of this non-magnifying finder will help you center distant objects in the telescope so you donıt have to search for them using the narrow eyepiece field of view.
- Go-to altazimuth mount: The sturdy Digimax single fork arm motorized altazimuth mount is designed for hands-free astronomical observing. It can be placed on a table top for backyard/patio use or mounted on its supplied adjustable height tripod for use in the field. Its supplied battery-operated dual motor drives automatically follow the motion of the planets and stars as they travel in curved paths from east to west across the sky. The single fork arm design is very stable and damps vibration of the lightweight optical tube quickly. The fork mount weighs only 5.3 pounds by itself, and a very transportable 8.5 pounds with the optical tube attached. There is a bubble level built into the mount base to improve the tracking accuracy.
- Dovetail tube mount: A dovetail foot on the optical tube slips into a dovetail slot in the mountıs fork arm, allowing fast set-up and take-down. There is a 1/4"-20 thread hole in the optical tube dovetail foot that lets you mount the optical tube on a conventional photo tripod for use as a terrestrial spotting scope.
- Motor drives: The supplied dual axis battery- or AC-operated right ascension and declination 12V DC servo motor drives can be set for a sidereal, lunar, or solar tracking rate to match the slightly different speeds at which the Moon, Sun, and stars move across the sky. This keeps objects from drifting out of the field during long observing sessions, or while several people in a row observe the same object. All drive gears, motors, and drive electronics are built into the Digimax mount body.
- Power requirements: The Konus Digimax-90 is powered by eight user-supplied AA batteries that fit into a compartment in the fork arm base. It can also be powered by an optional rechargeable 12V battery pack such as the 7 amp hour capacity Celestron Power Tank #4512V or by an optional AC power supply that is capable of providing a minimum of one amp 12V DC. The external DC input accepts a DC power cord that uses a 5.5mm female pin jack plug such as the 8ı long DC power cord provided with the Celestron Power Tank. There is a power on/off switch in the side of the base.
- Setting circles: There are no manual or analog setting circles to show you where in the sky the scope is pointing in right ascension (the east/west position of objects in the sky measured in hours and minutes) and declination (the north/south position measured in degrees). Instead, the hand control readout can display the celestial coordinates at which the scope is pointing whenever you are not using the computer to access its database. The digital readout is much more accurate than coarse and easily misread manual circles. The digital readout allows you to align the scope on the position of any object in the sky that is not in the database (such as a comet or asteroid). Simply use its r. a. and dec coordinates from the listings in magazines such as Astronomy and Sky & Telescope, rather than searching for it by star-hopping using the red dot finder and eyepiece. Setting circles can reduce the time it takes for you to find such interesting but ephemeral celestial objects.
- Slow motion controls: There are no manual slow motion controls on the Konus Digimax-90. Manual operation of the scope is done via the SkyScan hand control, using the built-in motor drives and the directional pushbuttons on the SkyScan. Ten different centering and slewing speeds are available, selected by pushbuttons on the hand control. The speeds available are 1x, 2x, 16x, 32x, 64x, 128x, 400x, 500x, 600x, and 800x the sidereal rate at which objects move across the sky.
- Tripod: The 4.15 pound adjustable height tripod is a modified photo tripod without pan head. The tripod has quick-adjust three-section steel legs and a crank-operated rising center post. The scopeıs fork arm and drive base threads onto a bolt in the center of the mounting platform at the top of the rising center post for use in the field, with the center line of the telescope optical tube approximately 8.5" above the top surface of the mounting platform. The tripod easily adjusts from 19" tall to 44" to accommodate a variety of observer heights, with an additional 11" available from the rising center post. However, it is recommended that the rising center post be always kept at its lowest level and locked in place for maximum stability and vibration damping. Total weight of the scope and tripod is 12.65 pounds.
- Camera adapter: An L-shaped bracket is provided that allows you to do wide-field astrophotography. One arm of the bracket slips into the mount in place of the Konus optical tube. The other arm of the bracket has a 1/4"-20 thread mounting bolt that threads into the bottom of your 35mm or digital camera to connect your camera to the bracket. To use the bracket, set up your scope and use it normally to find an object of interest. While the mount continues to track the object, replace the Konus Maksutov optical tube with the L-bracket with your camera attached. Take your wide field photo as the mount tracks across the sky. Exposures up to five minutes in length or so should be possible before star trailing in the images begins to show due to field rotation in the altazimuth mount.
- Carrying cases: Soft carrying cases are provided for both the tripod and the fork mount and optical tube.
- Computer hand control: The computerized Konus Digimax-90 mount is operated by an easy-to-use SkyScan computer hand control. In addition to fully computerized go-to operation, SkyScan also allows you to use the mount manually, using the computer to control the movement of the mount as you search the skies on your own, star-hopping from object to object. The SkyScan's hand control plugs into the side of the Digimax mountıs single fork arm. The SkyScan controller has an easy-to-read 2-line 16-character backlit LCD display. There are 19 fiber optic red-backlit positive-contact pushbuttons to make it easy for you to control the computer without affecting your dark-adapted vision. The red back lighting dims automatically to conserve power if the hand control is not used for 30 seconds, but comes back on if any hand control button is touched. An RS-232 communication port on the hand control allows you to operate the telescope remotely via a personal computer using any ASCOM-compliant software program.
- Built-in alignment programs: Two different sky alignment methods are built into the SkyScan computer, both computer-aided. One is a brightest star alignment, using two stars brighter than magnitude 1.5 in a relatively narrow user-selected section of the sky. There is also a more-accurate two star alignment method using two widely spaced stars from a list provided by the computer. Both alignment methods are easily accomplished in only a few short minutes. You can be observing in less than 15 minutes after you first take the scope outdoors, including telescope assembly time.
- Computer database: The SkyScan computer includes a celestial database of over 42,900 objects that it can find and identify for you. It includes all of the crowd pleasers like the planets, the Moon, all 110 Messier objects, 55 interesting double stars, and 20 well-known variable stars. In addition, the library includes many objects for advanced study, such as 7,840 of the brightest deep sky NGC objects from the Revised New General Catalog, 5,386 objects from the Index Catalog, 109 objects from the Caldwell Catalog, plus 29,523 SAO catalog stars. There is also the provision for adding 25 user-defined celestial favorites.
- Other computer functions: The SkyScan computer includes a Tour function that takes you on an automated tour of the best celestial objects visible from your location any night of the year. An identify mode can identify any unknown celestial object the scope is pointing at if the object is one of the 42,000+ in its memory. A Backlash function lets you increase the scopeıs pointing accuracy by compensating for the play in the drive system inherent in any gear-driven telescope. Normal pointing accuracy is better than 10 arc minutes, more than acceptable for visual observing purposes. However, the SkyScan computer includes a Pointing Accuracy Enhancement program that lets you improve the pointing accuracy of the scope by simply recentering an object after the scope has been aligned on the sky and has moved to the object automatically.
